Buying a used car from interstate or out of town

A step-by-step guide to buying a car you can't easily see in person, without getting caught out.

QUICK ANSWER

To buy a used car interstate safely, verify the car and seller with a PPSR check and a video walk-around, book a local independent inspection before paying, use a traceable payment method, and confirm transport and registration rules in your own state. Never pay a deposit before the car has been inspected.

Buying a car from another state or region can open up better choice and prices, but you can't kick the tyres yourself. Follow these steps to do it safely.

Verify the car and the seller

✓Get the VIN and rego number and run a PPSR check.
✓Ask for recent photos that include the odometer, VIN plate and any damage.
✓Ask for a video call walk-around, including a cold start.
✓Confirm the seller's name matches the registration papers.

Book a local independent inspection

Arrange for a qualified mechanic near the car to inspect it on your behalf. If the car is in the Newcastle or Lake Macquarie area, we can coordinate a time with the seller and send the photo report straight to you.

Pay safely

✓Be wary of sellers who ask for a deposit before an inspection, or who say they're away and the car is with a shipping agent. These are common scam patterns.
✓Use traceable payment methods and get a written receipt with the VIN.
✓Agree in writing who is responsible for the car until it's collected or transported.

Transport and registration

Get transport quotes before you commit, and check the registration and transfer rules in your own state, as registering a car from interstate can involve an extra inspection.
