What is a PPSR check, and why does it matter?

A PPSR check can tell you whether a car has money owing on it, or is recorded as stolen or written off. Skipping it puts your money at risk.

QUICK ANSWER

A PPSR check is a search of Australia's Personal Property Securities Register using a vehicle's VIN. It shows whether money is owed on the car to a lender, and whether it is recorded as stolen or written off. Run it before paying a deposit, because a car with finance owing can be repossessed.

The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is a national government register. A PPSR search on a vehicle's VIN is also known by its old name, a REVS check, after the state-based registers it replaced.

What a PPSR search shows

✓Whether there's a registered security interest on the car, which means money is owed to a lender such as a finance company.
✓Whether the car is recorded as stolen.
✓Whether the car has been recorded as written off.

Why it matters

If you buy a car that still has finance owing, the lender's security interest can stay attached to the car, giving the lender the right to repossess it even though you paid the seller. A written-off record can affect a car's value, insurability and registration.

When to do it

Run the check before you pay a deposit or the full amount, and check that the VIN you search matches the VIN on the car itself, not only the one in the ad.

You can add a PPSR check to any Green Bean Auto inspection for $15.
