Buying a used EV or hybrid: what to look for

Electric and hybrid vehicles have fewer moving parts, but they have their own wear points to check before you buy.

QUICK ANSWER

When buying a used EV or hybrid, check the high-voltage battery's state of health and remaining battery warranty, tyre and suspension wear (EVs are heavy), brake rotor corrosion from regenerative braking, the charging port and cables, hybrid fault codes, and the 12-volt battery. Hybrids also need their petrol engine service history checked.

Used electric and hybrid vehicles are becoming more common. They avoid some traditional maintenance items, but come with their own considerations.

Battery health

The high-voltage battery is the most expensive component in an EV or hybrid. Ask about the battery's state of health, and check what's left of any manufacturer battery warranty. Many manufacturers offer a separate, longer warranty on the battery.

Tyres, brakes and suspension

✓EVs are heavy, which can wear tyres and suspension components faster.
✓Regenerative braking means the brakes are used less, which can lead to corroded rotors and sticking callipers.
✓Check the tyres are a suitable specification for the vehicle.

Charging equipment

Inspect the charging port for damage and check that any included charging cables are present and in good condition.

Hybrid-specific checks

✓The petrol engine still needs regular servicing, so check the service history.
✓Look for hybrid system warning lights and stored fault codes.
✓Ask whether the hybrid battery or inverter has had any repairs.

The 12-volt battery

EVs and hybrids still use a conventional 12-volt battery to power their electronics, and a weak one can cause confusing faults.
